Pregnancy Recap 42 Years Old! – What I Expected and How Things Went

As I sit on the couch elevating my feet, I can’t believe it’s almost time! Time to meet our son. I thought it would be fun to document and share a full pregnancy recap. I’ll break down each trimester of what I expected and how things went. Check out my pregnancy announcement post here, if you missed it!

1st Trimester Recap

There are so many pregnancy stories on the internet but I’ve found that large in part, people share the negative more than the positive. I didn’t know what to expect really but was waiting for all the bad symptoms to start creeping in. The first six weeks I had no symptoms other than light cramping. In fact, if I wasn’t getting bi-weekly ultrasounds, I would have kept taking pregnancy tests. I didn’t feel pregnant!

By week six, I was sure some symptoms would start to appear. Like clockwork, week six rolled around and I started to experience sore boobs. I typically am not someone who has sore boobs pre-period so this was new territory for me. The other symptom I started to have was tiredness. I’m not talking lethargic tired but definitely noticeable I’m really tired by 2-3 pm.

Week seven was the worst week of my first trimester. I got a head cold and it was not pleasant. I was monitoring a fever, coughing, runny rose, the whole kit and caboodle. Luckily, my fever never rose past 100 degrees so I didn’t have to take any Tylenol but lord knows I wanted to! On the plus side, the cramping was subsiding at this point.

At this point during week ten, there were no food aversions or cravings for that matter. I did however, have the delightful experience of flossing and brushing my teeth making me nauseous. Go figure! This was such an odd symptom, I thought anyways.

To round out the first trimester, weeks eleven and twelve were uneventful. I was feeling less tired and the cramping was minimal, if any. All in all, I was in good shape!

2nd Trimester Recap

After the ease of the first trimester, I’m ready to take on the world heading into the second trimester. Or so I thought. During the second trimester, there were two things in particular I did not expect. The first symptom that caught me off guard was nosebleeds. I never had a nosebleed in my life! It was so strange to me and I had to ask my husband what I was supposed to do! Luckily, I had read that this was a normal symptom during pregnancy so I didn’t get overly worked up about it!

If you follow me on Instagram, you will know my second unexpected symptom. I have gestational diabetes. This was the shocker of a lifetime! I immediatley thought how is this possible?! I drink lots of water and eat so healthy.

Being uneducated on the topic, led to my initial thinking. Fast forward to the two and a half hour class I took with a nutritionist, required by my doctor. I quickly learned that how healthy you are pre-pregnancy has nothing to do with it! The placenta and the baby cause your body to process sugar differently.

At this point, I am on a meal plan and testing my blood sugar four times a day. I am fortunate, and am able to control my GD with diet and exercise. At 36 weeks, my fasting blood sugar started to creep up and my doctor prescribed Metformin. My fasting numbers started to regulate themselves so I never started the prescription. My doctor was aware and was comfortable based on my numbers.

3rd Trimester Recap

I made it! Home stretch, baby! I’m ready for whatever this trimester throws at me is the mental thought process at this stage. Things are starting to get uncomfortable, LOL. My son likes to push on the bottom of my rib cage and it doesn’t tickle. In terms of discomfort, I’ve also had what feels like a pinched nerve in the middle of my back on the right side. It comes and goes which is a huge positive! Towards about 36 weeks it seems to have resolved itself which I’m so happy about.

Last but not least, for my pregnancy recap, my third trimester blood work I tested positive for Strep B bacteria or GBS. One third of pregnant women test positive for the bacteria. Like gestational diabetes, you can have it with one pregnancy and not the next. There are no symptoms associated and at delivery, they administer antibiotics through my IV so the bacteria isn’t passed during delivery.

We Have An Induction Date!

Being 42 years old and having gestational diabetes, my doctor said going past 39 weeks wasn’t something he was comfortable with. With the holidays wedged in between 38-39 weeks, I was able to get in just a couple days before 39 weeks! So, December 29th is the date! Being induced, that can take some time so we will see when he decides to make his arrival!

Till Next Time,
