Keeping Only What I Love – Closet Clear Out

We have all experienced a time where we find pieces in our closets that we don’t wear but also will not get rid of. Why is that?! I have made a decision. I’m keeping only what I love. I am officially performing a closet clear out and bringing you along! Hoping this will give you inspiration as you read along to let go of pieces you don’t wear!

The Plan…

Where to start? How do I tackle what seems to be the most daunting of all tasks? To make this as least overwhelming as possible, I took my closet in sections. Shelves, drawers etc. I also use the touch it once technique. Once a piece was in my hand I had to make my decision: keep, donate or sell.

Let’s start with the guest room closet! This closet holds opposite season attire, lots of big bulky jackets, sweaters, and outerwear. I do my best when I am transitioning my closet, to take a good look at things. I try to identify if I didn’t wear it once during the 6 months it was in my closet, why? Knowing I let pieces stay I probably shouldn’t have.

After tackling the guest closet I can move to the master. My boyfriend and I share the closet in our master so that closet ultimately should take less time. That is my hope anyways! In the master, I keep the current season clothes and shoes. If you transition your closet Fall/Winter Spring/Summer during the transition is the ideal time to make these decisions. Asking yourself, if this piece really something I want in my closet again?

Guest Closet Clear Out

I’m ashamed to say that the guest room became a dumping ground for packages, things to return, pieces I need to shoot or film, a literal catchall. As a result, I was cleaning up the guest room and it put me in a mood. You know that feeling, you start cleaning and then before you know it you are doing all the things and cleaning out your closet. Totally normal 😉

From the guest closet, I pulled out some old joggers, sweatshirts and some pieces that I almost had duplicates. The thing that made me most upset with myself was that I had pieces still with the tags on that I had never worn. These were pieces that I needed to return and now I cant since the return period is over.

Master Closet Clear Out

Last on the agenda, we need to tackle the master closet! There is a little nook in the corner of the master closet. Pieces tend to get lost in there. Out of sight out of mind. This closet is fairly cleaned out and organized. However, there were still pieces in there that had no business still being there!

I had a couple dresses and a few skirts that I haven’t worn in over a year. But wait, one day I may want to wear that. Sorry girlfriend; time to say goodbye. Secondly, I have a couple pairs of shoes collecting dust that was time to say goodbye. All in all, the master closet was a little less painful.

Closet Clear Out, Now What?

I needed to figure out what to do with these items. I had listed on Mercari before and it went well so I decided to give that another try! With that being said, not everything I pulled from my closet can be donated. I made two piles: sell and donate. Through the Mercari app you can take your photos and list your items. It is very user friendly and just takes a couple minutes to list each item.

Visit my Mercari page to see what I have listed for sale!

Final Thoughts…

Keeping only what I love has been the best decision and has felt so great! Gone are the days when I look in my closet and say I have nothing to wear. I figured out the secret! I was thinking I had nothing to wear because I was looking through clothing that I didn’t love and I didn’t feel good in. Now, I love everything in my closet!

Till Next Time,

I always do a cleanout in the fall and spring! Thank you for sharing this new app, I’ve been looking for something else to sell on besides Poshmark and ThredUp. We cannot donate in NYC yet, but I’m hoping we will be able to do so soon again.
