Creative and Easy Ways To Turn Your House Into A Home

As a newlywed and having moved in with my husband to the house he owned, we are in process of turning this house into our home. Sharing with you some things we are doing within our home to give that cozy, lived in feel. When we have guests over and when we come we want that Welcome to Kirklands feel!

Chose Decor That Fits Your Style

You want your home to look and feel like a reflection of you. When you are starting out with adding decor to your home, you may feel stuck, or even start to question what your style is! My best advise is to not feel rushed. I know it’s so exciting to start decorating and you want it done yesterday but take your time and identify pieces that you truly love.

Tristan and I chose to start with the biggest pieces first and work our way down to the smaller decor accent pieces. If you are married or living with your significant other, the two of you may not have the same style and that’s ok. I do think it’s important to incorporate both styles as best you can. You want both individuals to feel like this is their home and is comforting to them.

Add Texture and Warmth With A Faux Brick Wall

If you have a large empty wall, as we do, it can be tricky to figure out what to put on all that space! We have been researching a lot of different texture options and have landed on Faux Brickwork! We have a large wall in our living room and all that is on the wall is our TV. It currently is not the warm inviting feel we are wanting. Faux Brickwork is actually faux brick wall panels that you can install yourself! If you are a DIY type person, this is your dream!

They offer different styles of brick looks and you also have the option to order “raw” so you can paint them a specific color if that is something you prefer. One thing that I really loved about Faux Brickwork is that for a small fee you can order samples. The cost of the samples is reimbursed at the time of order placement! I loved this since I was not going to pick out the brick. I could see multiples side by side in person and hold them against the wall. Adding warmth with a quick and easy project like this is a sure fire way to have your house feeling like a home!

Add Personal Touches, But Keep It Minimal

I highly recommend to be mindful of how many photos you have of yourself and your partner framed around the house. This is truly a balancing act. I’ve personally seen the extreme of both ways where one way looks like a shrine to the couple and the other way there isn’t a single photo. Finding that middle ground is so important. Don’t be afraid to have personal photos but use them sparingly!

I’ll use myself as an example. Tristan and I were married back in April, as you may know. I have yet to order our wedding photos because I am playing the balancing act in my mind. Which photos would I frame, what size, where would they go, and how many is too many for the size of our home? I know, right? So when I am looking at thousands of photos and all those questions are running through my mind I tend to just close the computer and say I’ll figure this out later.

This goes back to the beginning when I said don’t feel rushed. Yes, people ask where our wedding photos are and laugh when I say I didn’t order them yet. Work on your timetable. There is no right or wrong to how fast you decorate your home. What is important is that your house feels like a home and becomes your safe haven!
